Though Smith & Wollensky has become a national chain, the New York branch is the original. The restaurant is huge and retains a men’s club vibe that gives but the slightest nod to décor. What theme there is focuses on Americana: ornithological prints, duck decoys and weather vanes. The most popular items on the menu are the sliced steak, the sirloin, the filet mignon, the prime rib and the triple lamb chops or veal chops, with hash browns on the side. If you’ve sworn off red meat, try one of the large lobsters. For dessert, in addition to the cheesecake, there’s a terrific deep-dish apple pie. The wine list distinguishes Smith & Wollensky, which boasts a 50,000-bottle cellar, and from the prices it would seem that people who enjoy expensive steaks drink expensive wines. There are great old vintages of Bordeaux and California Cabernets, and plenty of oversize bottles, too.

I'm surprised at the poor reviews received for this restaurant. My husband & I ate here on November 20 & I can honestly say that we had the best steaks of our lives. I had a porterhouse & he had a sirloin, both chargrilled to perfection & served medium rare, exactly as ordered. We've previously eaten at Peter Luger's & been disappointed. We will definitely go back to Smith & Wollensky for their superlative steaks.

I was there with my husband, brother and his fiance on Saturday 9th December 2006 and it was terrible. I asked for my steak to be medium and the others asked for theirs rare and mine looked exactly the same, so needles to say I could not eat it all. The waiter kept hanging about our table so we felt like we were being rushed through our dinner because it was busy and there were people waiting to be seated and this was at 10pm. My brother was dissapointed because he had been to the one in Las Vegas and really enjoyed it and was looking forward to us going there. The drinks were over priced - $40 for 4 drinks oh my god what is that all about!!! The cheapest bottle of wine worked out to be £30. When the bill came they had already added on the tip at $45, we would not have tipped that much, they didn't deserve it.

we went there at 21.oct.2006 - 1 pm. service was terrible. Our steaks were like a coal.We wanted our steaks very well done but they burned them. Because of this we couldn't eat them but we paid 300 dollars.and we cancelled our rezervation for 23.oct.2006 evening.

A lovely meal was had. We decided to have a starter and a main course. BIG Mistake unless you have a big appitite.

The starter was huge, I have a prawn cocktail lovely prawns my wife had the Lobster. We both had chosen the Ribeye and it was cooked to perfection, and with the two steaks on the table there was not room for anything else.

The baked potatoes have to be seen to be believed, they are the size of a shoe I am talking size 9s.... Adult.
