Redeye Grill
our comments
Fifty feet from Carnegie Hall and near Central Park South and all midtown hotels, The Redeye Grill derives its name from the infamous late-night flight linking America’s two cultural hubs. The fusion of the two coasts is present both in this grand café’s interior design and its menu. The centerpiece of the restaurant is the fabulous dancing shrimp, sushi and original smoked fish bar – bookended by two giant bronze dancing shrimp sculptures specially crafted in Italy. A jazz band entertains guests nightly on the balcony.- April 2005

I was recommended this restaurant on my last evening by my hotel concierge. I made the booking myself and was offered a time which was fine as I needed to get ready. I casually asked what the dress code was and was told smart casual which suited my partner and I.
Nice atmosphere as it was busy but we had a non smiling waiter who took his time to get the menus to us and within 30 seconds came back to take our orders but we said we wanted drinks first. Hey don't get me wrong but aren't waiting staff suppose to work under all types of pressure and should maintain a consistant service in this game, clearly not the case with our waiter. The bread boy was more cheerful and it was a shame he didn't serve us.
We opted for a shellfish platter at $79 which for us Brits is dirt cheap with the good Pound to Dollar rate! A half bottle of wine and a coke for me and we were on our way. The food came and what I expected was a 'whole' lobster' but minus the tail !! I enquired about that and it seemed to fall on deaf ears with our waiter !!
We asked for the desert tray to be presented and it was like a chore for our waiter ! Evenutally it came and nothing took our fancy so we opted for ice cream but was told they only had gelati (excuse me but isn't that ice cream ?). We haad our coffees and before be asked for the bill it was presented to us !! I had two minds here, which was to pay for our food and leave no tip or do the honourable thing and leave a tip and complain but as we are 'out of towners' and it was our last night, I left a tip that covered the bare minimum, so in reality, I am encouraging this waiter to get away with low rate service. The other staff were polite and bid us farewell even though they did not serve us!
