Diners must traverse the Williamsburg Bridge to the Brooklyn side to sample excellent steaks at Peter Luger. Established in 1887, the steakhouse has been delivering mouthwatering porterhouse steak prepared in a method that has not changed in more than 100 years. Start with a tomato and onion salad, doused with steak sauce---the sauce is there strictly for the salad and for dipping rolls into, and should not be allowed to touch the delectable meat. Don’t even bother to consider another entrée; order the porterhouse steak for the table---basted with butter and always cooked rare, it will send devout carnivores into a delighted daze and may convert a non-meat eater or two. Classic sides are hash browns and creamed spinach. Servers are appropriately gruff and shopworn; most of them have worked at the steakhouse for years. A limited but reasonably priced wine list offers mostly red wines from California, with some French and Italian offerings.

i've eaten here many times and eaten steak in many places where my host has told me 'this is the best steak you'll ever eat.' but nothing comes close to peter lugers.
