This casual little bistro tucked away on a TriBeCa street has been as breathlessly awaited as some of New York’s most haute dining temples. It’s the second restaurant of Karen and David Waltuck, owners of Chanterelle, one of the above-mentioned temples; numerous delays and false starts kept the dining public on the edge of their banquettes with anticipation. Those who remember the ’70s and ’80s---as the Waltucks do---looked forward to dining in the new incarnation of the popular Le Zinc of those days. Finally, diners can sample the Waltucks’ version of a late-night bistro; the room is practically bare, save for a few French posters, and utterly unpretentious. The menu, a far cry from the fancy French served a few blocks away at Chanterelle, features homey French dishes like calf’s liver with onions and bacon, charcuterie, and some oddities like chicken satay and borscht. After all the patience, Le Zinc is, it seems, a simple late-night bistro that happens to have a great chef in the kitchen.- April 2005
