what the critics say

New Yorker

New Yorker

Monday, August 11, 2008 - It’s easy to walk straight past this unassuming Thai eatery, which is set deep in the heart of the N.Y.U.-occupied Village and shares a commercial strip with a liquor store, a mailing center, and a Citibank. The co-owner, Andy Yang, and his partner’s family also own the Malaysian restaurant chain Penang; inside, Rhong-Tiam is almost oppressively generic.

your comments review this restaurant

The NY Times review made this place sound like a bit of Thailand had blown over to NYC and brought authentic Thai food with it.....It hasn't.

The food is good but more expensive than other places in the area, and some of the dishes are spicy for the sake of being spicy - not the good kind of heat you get from 'proper' Thai food. The Pad Thai is good, though - nice balance of flavours, and crispy duck with honey sauce is great. Rice portions are stupidly small so order plenty.

Service can range from cold to downright rude, with staff not really seeming to care if you eat, live or die in their restaurant. That doesn't bother me - I'm there to eat, not make friends - but I know some people like a warm welcome and smiles etc.

Overall, good Thai food but don't expect miracles.
