Dark, discreet and inviting; Eighty One seems to attract an older or simply more mature crowd, which is fine by me.
When we visited, the bar area was buzzing but not too loud while the restaurant was a little quieter. The food was very good, though not mind-blowing, but certainly well cooked and presented. They do dessert very well here. The bourbon banana bread pudding with chocolate butterscotch sauce is delicious, and the chocolate and hazelnut mille-feuille was light and delicate and drizzled with hot fudge and white chocolate creme. (Can you tell we are chocolate lovers?)
I would recommend visiting for brunch as well. Even though the dining room doesn't look like it would be appropriate, it makes for a chic and grown-up meal rather than a lazy diner experience. The brunch cocktails at $6 are a bargain - try the Autumnal Mood: green tea vodka and licor 43 topped up with cider. Oysters are a good choice, as are the jumbo shrimp with saffron aioli.
All in all, well worth a try. We will be back.
