New Yorker

New Yorker

Monday, August 04, 2008 - At this new American eatery, just across from the Museum of Natural History, surprises abound. One evening, a hostess led a party past the main room and down a narrow hallway, which opened into the kitchen: a gantlet of sorts, lined with staff, all of whom rushed to wish the guests good evening. One didn’t quite know where to look, or how to respond. Then onward, to what looked like the library of a very tasteful gentleman—soft jazz, art tomes, dark wood.

Dark, discreet and inviting; Eighty One seems to attract an older or simply more mature crowd, which is fine by me.

When we visited, the bar area was buzzing but not too loud while the restaurant was a little quieter. The food was very good, though not mind-blowing, but certainly well cooked and presented. They do dessert very well here. The bourbon banana bread pudding with chocolate butterscotch sauce is delicious, and the chocolate and hazelnut mille-feuille was light and delicate and drizzled with hot fudge and white chocolate creme. (Can you tell we are chocolate lovers?)

I would recommend visiting for brunch as well. Even though the dining room doesn't look like it would be appropriate, it makes for a chic and grown-up meal rather than a lazy diner experience. The brunch cocktails at $6 are a bargain - try the Autumnal Mood: green tea vodka and licor 43 topped up with cider. Oysters are a good choice, as are the jumbo shrimp with saffron aioli.

All in all, well worth a try. We will be back.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 - Which brings us to this weekend, when we both decided that it was time to revisit Eighty One, albeit in a format that uses our earlier photos along with some old and some new thoughts on Chef Edward Brown’s little side-street gem.
